Call for Papers, 2026 Scholars' Colloquium

The Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities/Société pour l’Étude de l’Égypte Ancienne invites all doctoral level graduate students and senior scholars to submit proposals for papers to be given at this year’s Scholars’ Colloquium, to be held on NOVEMBER 6th and 8th, 2026 in Toronto. The deadline for submission is August 31st, 2026. Papers will be hybrid, delivered both In Person and Live via Zoom. Please indicate whether or not you will be present in person.
Proposals for Scholars’ Colloquium papers will be accepted in the fields of Egyptology, Anthropology, Classics, Fine Arts, Archaeology, Nubian Studies and related fields on ANY topic connected with pre-dynastic, pharaonic, Hellenistic, Roman or Coptic Egypt, but must represent an original contribution to the field. Presentations may be given in either English or French. Papers may not exceed 20 minutes in length.
Since a limited number of proposals will be accepted, papers will be vetted by committee. Interested scholars should send a title and brief abstract of their proposed paper to the Scholars’ Colloquium Coordinators at This email address is being protected from spambots. Please note that only proposals submitted in electronic format [i.e. via email] will be considered. Abstracts must not exceed 350 words in length. Preference may be given to scholars who intend to present in person.
The SSEA/SÉÉA is also holding its 49th Annual Symposium on NOVEMBER 7th. The Colloquium is held in conjunction with the Symposium. The topic for this year’s Symposium is Feasts and Festivals in Ancient Egypt. It will also be held in hybrid form, both In Person and live via Zoom. More information about the program for the weekend will be forthcoming.
We look forward to receiving abstracts from scholars from around the world and invite your submission with eager anticipation. This will be a memorable colloquium. Papers accepted for the Scholars' Colloquium are not limited to the topic of the Symposium, and no preference will be given to proposals based on topic. Please also note that the SSEA is soliciting proposals for the Scholars’ Colloquium only.
All participants in the Scholars’ Colloquium will be expected to pay the appropriate registration fee in advance. Presenters must be SSEA members. To become a member, visit the SSEA website, www.thessea.org, and click “Join us”.
The Sally L. D. Katary Scholarship is available to a Student Members of the SSEA or post-doctoral Young Scholar. This award may be given for any one of the following:
- To an applicant who would not otherwise have funding to travel to Toronto, to present at SSEA Scholars’ Colloquium;
- To an applicant, to present the paper presented at the Colloquium to another academic conference, within or outside of Canada;
- To an applicant travel to a museum/collection to pursue Egyptological research, including participating in an SSEA-sponsored excavation in Egypt or conducting on-site research.
Which category(ies) is/are awarded will depend upon the applications received during the Scholars’ Colloquium call for papers process. Potential applicants must state their interest at the time they submit to the Scholars’ Colloquium Committee, indicating the category for which they are applying.
