Crocodile Mummies: Stewart and Gilbert Bagnani in 1930s Egypt will introduce King Tut visitors and others to the AGO’s own Egyptian archaeological connection, in the persons of Gilbert and Stewart Bagnani, archaeologists, art collectors and friends of the AGO and Trent University. Together Gilbert and Stewart excavated at the site of Tebtunis in Egypt, during the 1930s. Gilbert Bagnani was also a professor of ancient history at University College, University of Toronto after WWII, and later at Trent University. At the same time, Stewart Bagnani was head of Extension at the Art Gallery of Ontario. In the 1960s they both taught at Trent University: Stewart teaching art history and Gilbert accepting a position as professor of ancient history. For more information on this exhibition and the Bagnanis, visit the Trent University page

The AGO also presents two other Egypt-themed installations, comprising works from the Gallery’s permanent collection. Egypt in the Western Imagination explores the growing interest in Egyptian culture among Europeans during the 1800s through etchings, watercolours, lithographs and photographs. This exhibit is in the Gelber Gallery, just off the Thompson Gallery. Views on Egypt: The Album as Souvenir allows visitors to experience the accounts and archaeological expeditions of travellers during the late 1800s through photographs. This exhibit is in the Fraser Gallery on the first floor.
