Calgary Chapter

The Calgary chapter was established in 1984 under the presidency of Krzysztof Grzymski, then a professor at the University of Calgary. From 1985 to 2002, the Calgary Chapter President was Lynne Nash, who fulfilled virtually every other executive position as well. (In February of 1997, Ms. Nash was presented with an honorary lifetime membership in the SSEA for her commitment and contributions.)

The 2007-2008 Chapter executive is:

Steven Larkman, Chapter President.
Julius Szekrenyes, Vice-President,
Gary Lloyd, Treasurer,
James Morison, Chapter Secretary

The chapter holds a series of lectures each year and produces a newsletter for chapter members, which is now by courtesy sometimes available online. Most lecturers are drawn from the local area, but every year there is a visiting speaker. Some of these have been drawn from as far away as England and Egypt. Past lecturers have included eminent Egyptologists such as T.G.H. James, Donald B. Redford, Donald Ryan, Aidan Dodson, Nancy Lovell, Edwin Brock, the late Winifred Needler, John L. Foster Chief Inspector Abdul Rahman al-Ayedi, Peter Brand and almost every other trustee (past and present) of the Society.

All lectures are held at Mount Royal College, Moot Court, Room EA 1031 @ 7:00 pm on the first Friday of each month from October to May (excluding January). All meetings are free and open to the public, so bring your friends. Don't miss the opportunity to hear these interesting lectures!

The Calgary Chapter of the SSEA maintains close connections with the Calgary chapter of the Canadian Society for Mesopotamian Studies. Each year the two society chapters host a lecture dealing with Mesopotamian-Egyptian connections and hold a joint potluck dinner.

Membership in the Calgary Chapter

The Society membership year runs from September 1 to August 30. Cheques, made payable to the SSEA Calgary, should be sent to the Calgary address below, not to Toronto. Membership dues may also be paid at the lectures. Every penny counts, as the portion of dues that stays in Calgary is the only means of paying transportation expenses for out-of-town speakers, whom we would otherwise not have the privilege of hearing, as well as all newsletter and mailing costs.

The portion of the membership dues which goes to the Toronto Society is used to help sponsor and promote Canadian archaeological expeditions to Egypt and to pay for the Journal published by the Toronto SSEA. There are two membership categories:

Ordinary (Full) Membership
60.00/year. Receive the SSEA Journal and quarterly newsletter (from Toronto, with news on recent excavations and findings in Egypt) and have a vote at the SSEA's annual general meeting in Toronto.
Associate Membership
$30.00/year. Receive the local newsletter, but do not receive the Journal nor have a vote in the Society's Annual General Meeting.

Membership information is available at the meetings. We look forward to seeing you at the meetings. If you have any questions or comments about anything, please contact the President, Steven Larkman at:
