About the SSEA![]() With chapters in four Canadian cities -- Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary -- and an American subsidiary, The Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities/La Société pour l'Étude de l'Égypte Ancienne is a Toronto-based non-profit organization founded to stimulate interest in Egyptology, to assist those interested, professional and non-professional alike, with research and training in the field, and to sponsor and promote archaeological expeditions to Egypt. The SSEA has also offered travel grants and scholarships to students who wish to do research in Egypt. The SSEA is a Registered Charity in Canada and the U.S.A. History of the SocietyThe Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities was founded in Toronto in 1969 and duly incorporated in August of 1970. The Society established the Canadian Institute in Egypt in 1980, and on 1 January 1981, the Society and its Institute became an affiliate of the Canadian Mediterranean Institute. In September 1982 an official protocol was signed between Egypt and Canada which established the Institute as an official cultural presence in Egypt at its premises in Cairo. Until the Canadian Institute in Egypt and the SSEA severed connection, logistical and secretarial services were provided to scholars engaged in research associated with Egypt and the Sudan. Throughout its history, the Society has provided support for many research expeditions in Egypt, including the University of Toronto's Wadi Tumilat Project. The SSEA has also carried out an epigraphic and archaelogical survey of Osiris Ruler of Eternity (Osiris Heqa Djet) at Karnak in Upper Egypt, and has been an active sponsor of the Dakhleh Oasis Project. Since 1970 the Society has published the Journal of the Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities (The JSSEA) and, since 1993, a Newsletter has been sent out to members. In 1984 the Calgary Chapter was formed and in 1999 a chapter was opened in Montreal under the name La Société pour l'Étude de l'Égypte Ancienne (SEEA). In 2007, the Toronto Chapter was established as an entity distinct from the head office of the Society. A chapter in Vancouver will be operational in January of 2010.
